9th Occupational Safety and Health Symposium

Theme: "Managing Risk in the Construction Industry"

 

ASPPI held the 9th Occupational Safety and Health Symposium at the OSHC Auditorium, North Ave., cor. Agham Road, Quezon city last June 13, 2008.

 

It was the first time ASPPI has held a symposium at the OSH Center Auditorium and the turn-out was good. Attendance was more that expected with a total of 158 attendees from various companies and institutions.

 

The first presenter was none other the Chairman of the Board of Electrical Engineering, and presently President of WESTCO Electrical and Equipment Corporation, Engr. Rodolfo R. Peńalosa, with the theme “In Construction, Why Learn New Methods, Upgrade Skills and Safety”. He discussed about his Eight (8) rules to a Superior Safety Program.

 

Second presenter was Robinson S. Uy, of MERALCO with topic on “Risk Management in Electrical Construction”. He discussed about Risk Management Framework and its application to one Electrical Project safety.  It was also a good opportunity for the attendees to know more about “Systems Loss”, currently the most pressing issue of the cost of power production.

 

In the afternoon session, Engr.  Andrew Ventulan, Senior Project Manager of Shimizu Philippine Contractors, Inc and current National Director of ASPPI, discussed about “ Safety Audit in Construction”, where he showed audit points on the Occupational Safety and Health standards with focus on Construction Safety.

 

Engr. Rodolfo C. Menguita, DM Consunji. Inc.’s Manager for  Human Resource Department discussed about “ The Vital Role of Manpower Recruitment in Managing Construction Risks”, where he stated “..get the best people to manager and the best people to work on the risks and overcome the negative nature of construction.”

 

For the closing remarks, Atty. Brenda Villafuerte encouraged the attendees to once again help advocate safety in the workplace as what the Association has been doing the past two years now in helping spread safety throughout the country and abroad through its several chapters. ASPPI's effort has helped the Bureaus' drive to regionalize the accreditation process for safety practitioners and establish itself as a technical partner of the Bureau of Working Condition.
